HOSA students advance to State contest

HOSA students advance to State contest
HOSA winners included Alexandria Traylor, Brieann Kelton, Yadira Vasquez, Azucena Quiroz, Brandy Collins, Chase Apperson, Idalid Solorzano, John Nunes, Nadia Walkinshaw, Mrs. Kelton, not pictured Courtney Bell.

Ten HOSA members are headed to Corpus Christi April 14-16 to compete in the state contest after their wins in the regional contest last week.

“I believed they would be just fine in the contest,” HOSA adviser Shari Kelton said. “I let them know that the first day they came into my class they were winners.”

Ms.Kelton was not with her students while they were competing at the regioanal conference, nor was she in the country. She was on the other side of the world in Israel leaving her confidence in the team’s leadership skills for the contest.

“ This is the first time in 20 years as an educator that I have missed a competition,” Kelton said.

Even without their instructor present to support them in contest, the students competed as if she was there. She says it made her proud to know they were capable of carrying on in her absence.

“The peace-of-mind that the students want to, can and will make the right choices even when the regular teacher is not there is refreshing for me as a teacher,” Kelton said.

The students finished the Regional contest with ten members advancing to state. The team had both newcomers and veterans on the team this year.

“ I was elated for myself and for DHS HOSA chapter that we won so many medals and are advancing to the next level,” senior veteran Alexandria Traylor said.

The students will continue to work on some of the same things as they prepare for state in a month. The main thing they say is to just have their minds focused and ready to win.

“It takes a day or two to prepare for the contest but we are just all working so hard,” senior Brandi Taylor said.
