Panthers to face another test in Mesquite Horn tonight

Panthers to face another test in Mesquite Horn tonight
Last week in the tough 28-8 los to Abilene, the Panther Defense spent 93 plays on the field. Tonight the offense will look to change that and get the first win of the season. (Ariana Canchola photo)

Friday night lights are back in Duncanville for the second home game of the year. The Panthers will again face a ranked team in the state against Mesquite Horn.

The Panthers are coming off of two tough losses to Colleyville Heritage and Abilene. In Week 1 the Panthers faced Number 8 ranked Colleyville with Oklahoma commit Cody Thomas leading the team under center. Colleyville put up over 20 points behind the running and passing of Thomas leaving the Panthers with only 2 point in that match-up.

In week two the Panthers were looking to bounce back as they played another ranked team in Abilene taking on the Eagles. Although the Panthers looked to be off to a good start, the Offense couldn’t get on the board the entire first half however Abilene led by quarterback Evin Abbe and running back Keevan Lucas. Together they connected for 118 yards. Abbe accounted for 256 of the team’s 379 total yards in the 26-8 loss for the Panthers.

In the second half the Panthers were able to pick up a touchdown behind the running of quarterback Aaron Piper on long runs down the field. Piper ended up leading the Panthers on offense with 14 rushes for 90 yards. The Defense stayed on the field most of the night against both Abilene and Colleyville and will see some strong action tonight as well.

The Panthers will be tested against a well balanced running and passing offense tonight in the Mesquite Horn Jaguars. They are led by quarterback Destri White and running back Treyvon Marsh who have both had stellar starts this season giving the Jaguars a 2-0 start to their season. Both players are coming off of a good game against the Garland Owls where they destroyed the owls 42-0. Marsh rushed for 99 yards and four touchdowns against the Owls while White threw for a pair of scoring passes while the Horn defense held Garland to 96 total yards and four first downs.

Tonight is the night where the offense will need to get out of their slump and put up some big numbers on the Jaguar defense. Aaron Piper, Jaquan Cole, and William Jackson need to have a big game tonight and give the defense some rest in between drives to get the first home win of the year before starting district play next week.
