Panther tennis returns from College Station with first place

    Fall Tennis season congratulations.

The Panther tennis team went to College Station to play in another tennis tournament preparing for the district tournament on April 8-9. The team finished first overall out of 16 teams.

Senior Jocelle Rudico and sophomore Gavin Beach won the boys and girls singles division. Gavin Beach won his finals match (6-4, 6-0). Both of these players have lost only one match this spring headed into the district tournament. Junior Kris Vasquez placed 6th out of 32 people. Vasquez beat the number two seed in the tournament with a dominating score of (6-2, 6-0).

In boys doubles seniors Weston Hill and Cedric Ambulo made it to the finals only to take on their teammates, senior Eric Shimomura and sophomore Austin Gula. The match was very close and full of intensity, but Eric and Austin pulled out the win with a score of (6-4, 6-3). In girls doubles senior Selena Facundo and sophomore Daejia Lynch placed fourth in the tournament.

In mixed both teams lost first round, but made it to the consolation finals. Seniors Donald Kelly and Emily Villereal took on their own teammates in the finals. Juniors Andrew Gula and Carolina Falcon lost (6-4, 6-2) in a hard fought final versus their teammates.

The Panthers finished first in the College Station tournament for the first time ever and look to keep their good play going into district. The Panthers take on Plano East in a dual on Friday in Plano. That will be their last match before the district tournament and the road to state.
